Greenstone | Pounamu Niho/Tooth Bound Pendant

The Niho/Tooth symbolizes determination, leadership, courage and protection. The Niho is associated with two significant sea creatures, the whale and the shark. In Māori legend, whales were considered a precious gift from the god of the sea. To wear a Niho was to signify the grounding connection between man and Moana (sea), and was often indicative of leadership and strength of character. The shark also represents guardianship and courage, adorned for protection and trust.

Beautifully hand carved in Hokitika, South Island, New Zealand by Donna Summers. As a child she was taught that pounamu is a precious taonga, a sacred gift that is passed down through the generations. While working with creating the traditional motifs Donna takes inspiration from the location where she grew up, whether it was spending hours at the beach fossicking or out in the far north wilderness.

Her work continues to evolve. Donna's intuitive carving reflects her skilled eye for beautiful design. Her pieces speak for themselves.
