Johnny Turner - Oculus, 2024

Oculus continues Johnny Turner’s exploration of duality, transition and material. Acting as a portal, it allows light, thought and words to pass between opposites, day and night, earth and sky, reflecting life’s fleeting, transformative nature.

Carved from luminous Carrara marble from Carrara, Italy, the stone carries a profound history. Formed from microscopic sea life and transformed over 200 million years, this ‘stardust’ is both ancient and enduring.

Turner, largely self-taught and based in Wellington, draws inspiration from Greek history, classical mythology, indigenous culture, and Japanese aesthetics. His works merge classical form with contemporary resonance, appearing poised in space or emerging from the earth.

Oculus embodies Turner’s instinctive relationship with stone, precise yet echoing the organic perfection and quiet power of natural forms.
