Also known as whakahao/rāpoka or Hooker’s sea lion, sea lions are one of the rarest and most threatened sea lion species in the world and are only found on our shores. Their main breeding populations are the Auckland and Campbell Islands in the Subantarctic, as well as the Otago and Southland coasts, Stewart Island. A full grown male can weigh up to 320–450 kilograms!
