Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz. Its name comes from the ancient Greek word methysko, meaning intoxicate - a reference to the belief that the stone protected its owner from becoming drunk. Ancient Greeks carved drinking vessels from the stone, believing it would prevent intoxication.
