Topaz is a clear stone in its natural state, with its colours coming from impurities present within the stone.

Ancient Sri Lanka (known as Tamraparni) exported native oriental topaz stones to ancient Egypt and Greece, leading to the etymologically related names of the island - topazius, the name given by Greek scholar Alexander Polyhistor and topapwene, the name given by the early Egyptians - meaning land of the topaz.
