Quinta de Pacos Casa do Capitao Mor Sobre Lias 2018
"Aged in barrel and undergoing lees contact (sobre lias = sur lie), this is a big, bold and beautiful white wine. Butter, butterscotch, ripe stone and exotic fruits and a full body make this the perfect accompaniment to scallops with honey and white truffle, steak frites with béarnaise sauce, or simply as a treat for lovers of rich Chardonnay, Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc and the like. From the north of the Vinho Verde region, this pure Alvarinho has great style and clarity. Green fruits are enhanced by the wine's tight acidity and citrus."
Nestled in the hills neighbouring the Minho River and the Atlantic Ocean lies Quinta de Paços, a family-based agricultural society which has been producing high-quality wines with a distinctive personality since at least the early 16th-Century. Their wines have long been internationally recognised as exceptional, from winning their first international award in 1876 to presently having wines rated within the top fifty of Portugal. 500-years of wine production and viticulture - certified sustainable to the highest EU standard - results in balanced wines that express their unique terroir, with just the right amount of winemaking to showcase the characteristics of indigenous white Portuguese varieties. Their use of Loureiro & Alvarinho are particularly exciting; the former (translating to "Bayleaf") is beautifully aromatic, perhaps reminding one of the Loire Valley, Alsace or Germany. The iconic Alvarinho- best know globally as Albariño, as it is called in neighbouring Spain- cultivated in the prized sub-region of Monção-Melgaço, whose conditions allow the grape to flourish and be transformed into bold, fresh & mineral white wines of the highest calibre. These wines are excellent with a range of seafood & sunshine.
