Mastery – Becoming a Word Whizz

The Mastery Hub is designed for children aged 5 - 10 years who have a strong literacy foundation and are ready to refine their spelling, reading, and writing skills at an advanced level.

This hub focuses on the more advanced spelling patterns children encounter in everyday reading and writing, such as ou/ow , oi/oy , oa/ow , and oo. Learners also explore how words change when we add endings like -ed , combine words to form compound words ( raincoat, sunset ), or shorten them into contractions ( can’t, didn’t ). We also introduce the soft c and soft g sounds so children understand why city and giant sound different from cat and goat.

Each of the 9 workshops builds on their existing knowledge, allowing them to confidently read and write a wider range of words and sentences while mastering more sophisticated literacy concepts. The content in this hub is designed to align with the third year of schooling under The New Zealand Curriculum. What Your Child Will Learn
