Stepping Stones – Literacy Confidence

The Stepping Stones Hub is designed for children aged 5 - 10 years who have mastered basic letter sounds and can confidently read and write simple 2- and 3- letter words.

This hub helps children move beyond one-sound-per-letter thinking. To do this, it introduces new digraphs like sh, ch, th, wh, and ng, which are common in everyday words. We also support your child to progress to the next stage of literacy by introducing common spelling rules and word endings. Each new step connects directly to what came before, helping children make sense of how English words work rather than just memorising them.

Each of the 10 workshops builds on the previous one, providing clear guidance on when your child is ready to progress to the next workshop. The content in this hub is designed to align with the first year of schooling under The New Zealand Curriculum. What Your Child Will Learn
