Important record of early European settlement - "New Zealand - Nelson The Latest Settlement of the New Zealand Company, by Kappa, 1842

 

This little treasure has been rebound in attractive blue board with gilt lettering to spine. The original text within dates from 1842 and comprises 44 pages, with a detailed account of the new settlement opportunity in Nelson.

The pamphlet describes the planning of Nelson, the arrival of Captain Arthur Wakefield, the surveying of town and rural sections, and the early, idealistic, and speculative plans for the colony, published just as settlers were beginning to arrive in 1842.

Published by Smith, Elder & London. Kappa is a pseudonym generally attributed to John Ward (1805–1890), a key figure from the New Zealand Company.
