AVAILABILITY Year-round.
EATING Mussels are plump and meaty, with a chewy texture. They're also really good for you, as they're high in Zinc, Iron, Vitamins A and B12. When live, mussel shells are usually tightly closed. If the shells are slightly open, close them with your hand a couple of times and they should shut tightly again. If they don’t close, discard them. Tug the hairy beads from the shells before cooking. Mussel shells open when heat is applied to them (by steaming, sauté, grilling …). Discard any that don’t open when cooked. Our Mussels are sold live, by the KG.
STORING Live mussels can be stored in a domestic fridge for a couple of days with a damp tea towel or cloth covering them, until you're ready to cook them.
HARVEST AREA Farmed and supplied to us by Mill’s Bay Mussels from Havelock, Marlborough.
AVERAGE WEIGHT Usually 10-15cm in length.
