A Rare Variety with a Resurgent Legacy
Liberica (also known locally as cà phê mít for its jackfruit-like leaves) is an underappreciated coffee species that was historically overlooked due to its low yield and challenging cultivation. Yet, as dry climates and shifting growing conditions push the coffee world to explore resilient alternatives, Liberica’s distinct character is experiencing a revival among specialty roasters across Southeast Asia.
In Vietnam, farms like those around Hướng Phùng in Quảng Trị Province have nurtured Liberica trees for generations. Until recently, Liberica was largely relegated to blended or commercial uses, but innovators like Madame Huong are changing that narrative by elevating this varietal to specialty status through careful farming and progressive processing.
Award-Winning Coffee from SEA Green
In 2024, Madame Hướng Liberica made waves by earning top honours at the Southeast Asia Green Coffee Competition—a respected regional event spotlighting exceptional coffees from across Southeast Asia. This award isn’t just a trophy; it’s a sign that Vietnamese Liberica can hold its own in quality and character against more traditional offerings from the region.
This recognition marks a meaningful step forward for Liberica as a serious specialty coffee contender—proof that persistence, terroir, and thoughtful processing can unlock something extraordinary from an often overlooked species.
Behind the Cup
What makes this coffee special? It starts with hand-picked cherries from mature Liberica trees in Hướng Phùng’s tropical climate. These beans undergo a 200-hour anaerobic fermentation, a deep, controlled process that encourages bold flavour development while preserving sweetness and complexity.
After fermentation, the beans are dried carefully to lock in nuance and balance. Unlike typical Robusta or Arabica lots from Vietnam, Liberica’s large cherries and unique bean structure require thoughtful handling, making every step from harvest to roast essential to its personality.
In The Cup
Madame Huong Liberica is unlike either Arabica or Robusta: think rich umami sweetness, sugarcane notes, and honeyed depth that linger. Some roasters describe similar Liberica lots with tasting highlights like mía lau (sugarcane) and rich molasses, while others find floral or fruity undertones that surprise even seasoned drinkers.
This is a coffee that rewards curiosity—a cup that’s bold yet nuanced, familiar yet entirely its own.
